40-Days

Lent - Drawing near
to the Lord

The season of Lent is the time of year in the church calendar when we prepare ourselves for the celebration of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus during Holy Week.  Initially the 40 days of Lent were used to prepare new converts for baptism on Easter Sunday.  Just as Jesus was tested for 40 days in the wilderness prior to his public ministry and Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai while receiving the Law, new converts went through an intensive 40-day season of training and preparation prior to their baptism.

Lent is meant to be a time for turning to God and recalibrating our hearts to him.  Historically, the practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving have been a way for believers to express their repentance and examine themselves in the season of Lent.  The intention of this time is not to deprive ourselves of creaturely comforts for the sake of self-improvement, but rather to reorient our loves and open ourselves up to God’s gracious work in our lives.

We have prepared a devotional that you can download here to help as you engage with this season of Lent. You can find that by clicking the button below.
